Stainless Steel Grades for Plates and Sheets

There are varieties of stainless steel grades, these grades have excellent properties to suit applications, they are known as high strength and superior corrosion resistance material. 304 and 316L are the most used grades, common grades are listed for reference, and selecting which type of stainless steel grade depends on a specific application.

304 Stainless Steel Plate

304 Stainless Steel Plate, the most widely used of the stainless and heat-resisting steel. 304 stainless plate offers good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrodents as well as industrial atmospheres and marine environments. 304 Stainless Steel Plate has excellent formability and can be readily welded by all common methods. 304/304L dual certified.

316 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate

Like 304 SS, grade 316 stainless steel also has high nickel and chromium content, but the addition of molybdenum further improves the corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides or chlorinated substances. These properties make grade 316 stainless steel sheets and plates ideal for medical applications, marine environments, refining or chemical processing, and other highly corrosive environments.

Plate & Sheet Surface Finishes

Stainless steel plate & sheet have various finishing conditions to suit the application, there are main surface finishes below, which can be obtained by cold rolling or hot rolling producing method. Standard stainless steel sheets and plates are solid and flat with no surface texture.

  • NO.1 – Hot rolled, annealed, and descaled
  • 2D – Cold rolled, dull finish
  • 2B – The general-purpose, cold rolled, smooth finish
  • BA – Bright, cold rolled, highly reflective finish
  • NO.3 – Intermediate polished finish
  • NO.4 (BRUSHED)– General-purpose ground polished finish produced from 2B finish
  • NO.8 (MIRRORED) – Highly reflective ‘mirror’ finish produced from 2B finish

This Standard specifies requirements for the cold-rolled stainless steel plates and sheets (hereafter referred to as plates) and cold-rolled stainless steel strip (hereafter referred to as strip).

Difference Between Plate And Sheet

Stainless sheet and plate look similar in shape, strictly speaking, they are different in thickness and durability, sheets are thinner, usually 6mm or less, and used for lightweight residential applications, while plates provide more tensile strength and are used in heavy-duty applications.

Cold Rolled & Hot Rolled Differences

There are some differences between hot-rolled steel and cold rolled in the metal industry, the main difference is the manufacturing process of steel, Hot-rolled steel is rolled at a high temperature, which makes steel easy to form and to fabricate hot rolled type steel is easier to get target sizes and dimensions after processing, Cold rolled steel is rolled on the basis of hot rolled steel, then picking and remove scale on the surface, cooling at room temperature, they have benefits respectively。

Hot Rolled Characteristics

  • Uniform grain size, avoiding structure defect
  • Improve properties
  • Shaped and formed easily
  • Non-metallic inclusions inside steel remain
  • Stress exists
  • Not easy to control width and thickness precisely
  • Scaled surface
  • Cheaper than cold rolled steel

Cold Rolled Characteristics

  • Clear and smooth surface
  • More finishes option
  • Closer tolerances
  • Stronger hardness
  • Limited in a few shapes
